Dennis Bal, a renowned educator, writer, playwright, and visual artist, has been active since the late 1980s. Mumbai Art Room presents a new installation by this artist originally from New York, now based in Bangkok.
The series exudes a latent sense of exhausted political idealism, an apparent collision of populist imagery. It even suggests a few uncanny parallels with contemporary events. Using signs, lightboxes and pictures skillfully picked from the public realm, he invites viewers to consider how perceived meanings tend to drift and change, and how culture is often composed from leftover shards and splinters.
Throughout the nineties and the later decade, he was an Art Director and media designer for both TV and emerging tech and social/ media at McCann Erickson, among other agencies. Since the late eighties his work that has been executed in multiple formats, the disparate conditions of narrative and its subsequent social reception, has been exhibited all across the world widely, including a survey presented at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2009). Among the publications are ‘particles + waves with plausibility’ (2006), ‘Colin de Land’, American Fine Arts (2008) and ‘Dennis Balk/1890-2090’ (2010).
Beginning in 2006 he was appointed Coordinator of the Department of Fine Arts/ Computer Graphics at the New York Institute of Technology, Bahrain Campus and the Director of the Bahrain Media Lab at NYIT in the Arabian Gulf. Apart from being Chairperson of the Computer Graphics/ Multimedia Department at Bangkok University International, he also has taught in the Arabian Gulf, at Università IUAV di Venezia, Yale University, and the University of California at Los Angeles. In 2009 he was appointed Director of New Media Initiatives with the Institute for Knowledge and Innovation, Southeast Asia.
