Major achievements of Samir Mondal

Originally from West Bengal and now living in Mumbai, Samir Mondal is one among India’s best watercolorists of his era. He prefers to work on paper. His captivating colors build a symphony on canvas, as they smoothly follow and flow to his masterly command. The majestic medley reveals the joy of the medium. His contemporary female protagonists are all bold and beautiful, empowered and strong.

An alumnus of Government College of Arts, Kolkata, Samir Mondal has had more than 30 solo shows and participated in many important group exhibitions in major cities of India and abroad. He explored major cities of Germany for art study under INDO-FRG Cultural Exchange Program by DAAD.

The artist’s work has been featured in many prestigious art auctions conducted by Christies and other top auction houses. He has visited several top cities of the world, such as Paris, Germany, Dubai, Mauritius, Australia, Bangkok, Kenya, Israel, Egypt, Russia, Morocco and China as part of his artistic voyage.

Rated among the best portrait painters, he is renowned cover page illustrator. In recognition of his talent and contribution to the world of art, Samir Mondal has received many prestigious Awards, including AIFACS, New Delhi, West Bengal State Academy Award (twice), Academy of Fine Arts Award (twice) and A.P. Council of Artists Hyderabad.

His works form part of several prestigious collections like The National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi, Museums of Karnataka, RPG Enterprises, Standard Chartered Bank, Tata Steel, Birla group of companies, ICI India Ltd., Benson and Hedges, Brooke Bond, Citibank, Ministry of External Affairs, India, DSP Merrill Lynch, Deutsche Bank, Solomon Smith Barney India Ltd., and J P Morgan among others.

One of his most significant series of artworks was ‘The War and the Butterflies’. Samir Mondal’s famed style of Still Life paintings has evolved over time; the early formal, stilted style associated with the British school of painting to the period of Experimental work, leading to the Abstracted Post Modern style. In complete command of his painterly expertise, he started offering a long line of series of paintings.
