Skoda Auto India has conceptualized a prestigious award to celebrate contemporary Indian art. Along with Seventy Event Management Group, the prestigious car brand has announced a new initiative, termed ‘The Skoda Prize’.
The award and the event are planned as an annual celebration that will honor am outstanding work of art in the country. In India, it’s probably a first of its kind idea the core of which is to recognize and honor young and talented artists. Each individual artist will be judged on the exhibits, or other comprehensive presentations of their work produced in the year preceding the award.
The jury panel is chaired by Tasneem Mehtam. Rajshree Pathy and Dr. Kavita Singh are the jury members. There is also an advisory committee under art critic Girish Shahane. The Skoda Prize aims to be the deserved recognition for quality in the world of art, endorsed by high priests of the art industry.
Thomas Kuehl, director (sales & marketing) of SkodaAuto India, stated that the new association was a great opportunity to offer a platform of recognition for the talented contemporary Indian artists contributing to the global art scene. The Seventy Event Management Group CEO, Martin da Costa mentioned “I’m confident that the whole art fraternity and also the large art loving audience will be eager to view the exhibitions as well as the show we shall unveil as part of the enriching Skoda Prize journey.
Artists can submit their nominations for the prize by following the guidelines on the official website (www.theskodaprize.com). In addition to artworks entered by artists into the nomination process, the Advisory Panel will be approaching the best of galleries across the country to nominate artists for the prize.
The Skoda Prize Catalogue will feature top 20 shortlisted artists. The final three artists’ artworks will be hosted as part of an exhibition in New Delhi. The winner will be announced in January 2011. The award is worth Rs. 10 lakh. The company is looking to promote contemporary Indian art as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative.
